The Han Chinese did not settle in the region until the 18th century.

* Grown in Toufen Township, Miaoli County, Taiwan. Archeological research shows that in the prehistoric era, people lived in this area on river terraces. They mainly led an agricultural life and engaged in hunting and fishing for extra food sources. About a thousand years ago Taokas, a group of the indigenous Taiwanese, settled here. The name Miaoli refers to a plateau in Taokas. Miaoli County is located in the mid-northern coast of western Taiwan. It faces the Taiwan Strait in the west.
