Holy Cross Fathers Visit
Hieromonk Seraphim, Superior of Holy Cross Hermitage in Wayne, West Virginia, accompanied by Rassophore-monk Pimen, made a pilgrimage to All-Merciful Saviour Monastery from June 6th through June 17th. It was truly a joy for the monks of Vashon Island to share a week of fellowship and Divine Services with the fathers from West Virginia. On June 17th, Monk Paul accompanied the two West Virginians for a two week stay at Holy Cross. It is planned that the two brotherhoods will regularly have exchanges between the two communities, for mutual support. We are the only English language monasteries of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad in the United States.
Baptism
On Saturday July 17, 2004 Edward and Kaye Pierson were baptised into the Orthodox Church. Both are converts from the Roman Catholic Church and have been attending the Monastery for about one year. Edward took the name of Edward the Martyr of England, Kaye took the name Matrona for the Holy Martyr Matrona of Chios. The baptism was attended by several of Edward’s family and a number of Island Orthodox Christians including sponsors Peter Serko and Eudokia Boots.
God Grant the newly illumined Edward and Matrona Many Years!
Fire Threatens Monastery Buildings
On Sunday afternoon, June 27, 2004 a brush fire broke out on the Monastery grounds and came close to burning the St John Chapel. The Monastery recently had a number of trees removed and some clearing done. According to the fire department the fire probably started as the result of spontaneous combustion in a debris pile due to extremely dry weather. At the time nobody was at the Monastery. The fire was called in by an Islander noticing the smoke from several miles away. Fr. Tryphon returned to find firefighters on the grounds aggressively battling the quickly spreading fire. Had the call not gone in when it did the fire could have been disastrous for the Monastery and the surrounding forest. The Monastery is in a heavily wood area where a fire could quickly spread under the dry conditions. By God’s mercy and the hard work of firefighters the disaster was averted.
